英语语法详解:三字一体的片语动词

前此举出了不少片语动词,供大家参考。这些片语动词的共同点是,它们都是二字一体的,有些两个字可以分开,有些不可分开,有些可以带宾语,一些不可以带宾语,林林总总,不一而足。

  这里要谈的片语动词,是由三个字组成的,方式是:动词+副词性虚词+介词。三字一体的片语动词都是不可分开的,意思比较固定,都要带宾语。

  下面便是些常见的例子:

  catch up with:赶上

  “If a taxi and a bus depart at the same time, the bus is always slower and cannot catch up with the taxi.”

  come up with:建议;提出

  “Researchers spent a considerable amount of time working on the project, but did not come up with any new idea.”

  do away with:去掉、废除

  “Are all the traditional things bad and should be done away with?”

  run out of:缺乏

  “When soldiers run out of provisions in the course of fighting, they are doomed to fail.”

  boil down to:总结起来是

  “The whole matter boils down to a power struggle between the two cliques.”

  break in on:干扰

  “The loud noise of the alarm clock broke in on her sweet dream.”

  cash in on:谋取利益

  “Let's cash in on the fine weather by going somewhere for a holiday.”

  catch on to:理解

  “An inquiring mind quickly catches on to a new idea.”

  chime in with:配合

  “The blue shirt chimes in with the colour of his trousers.”

  chip away at:破坏

  “Over-reliance on teaching aids will chip away at teachers' innovative skills.”

  come down with:生病

  “Nancy has come down with a bad cold again.”

  come in for:获取;继承

  “At the death of his father, Lu Ta came in for a large fortune.”

  cry out against:大力反对

  “The people should cry out against the imposition of unjust law.”

  cry out for:非常需要

  “Our universities are crying out for capable and experienced teaching staff.”

  drive away at:努力工作

  “Jason sits at his desk for hours, driving away at his new writing task.”

  face up to:敢于面对

  “All have to face up to realities.”

   feel up to:能担当;能承受

  “Being an elderly man, Tony does not feel up to long hours of office chores.”

   fill in for:代替

  “I can't go to tomorrow's meeting. Can you fill in for me?”

   follow up with:探究到底

  “After the initial investigation, the police followed up with further scrutiny.”

   get off with:回避惩罚

  “Because of his young age, the petty thief got off with a warning.”

   give in to:妥协;让步

  “All and sundry gave in to the orator's convincing argument.”

   read up on:熟读

  “You have to read up on the previous minutes before going to the next meeting this afternoon.”

   zero in on:注意力集中于

  “Please zero in on the key issues being discussed.”
